Believe it or not, that is actually a cupcake. Red velvet. Mmmmm. Red velvet heart.
Choose your favorite red velvet cake recipe, or a boxed one, as we did, and bake cupcakes according to the directions. We made six extra large cupcakes in order to get a bigger heart, closer to that of a horse.
As the cupcakes are cooling on a rack, roll out enough fondant to completely cover a cupcake. This amount will vary, depending on your cupcake size. Once the cupcakes are completely cooled (this is important), place a cupcake on its side on the rolled out fondant, and bring up the edges of the fondant to the top of the cupcake and mold the edges together. Use the top edge of one or two of the sides to create the arteries, and press the fold of the fondant together to create the appearance of the arteries and veins.
Mix black and red food coloring with piping gel to create the colors to paint the heart with. Work in layers to create depth and realism. The piping gel will stay shiny, even when dried.
Serve with a cherry compote. You can also fill the cupcakes with compote or jam before wrapping in the fondant for some fun when cutting into them!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Nice Idea :)
perfect! Haha. Great pictures as well :) I like peeking by here, so sorry if I’m not commenting sufficiently. Have a wonderful day!
WOW!! O_o Great!!! Actually, I had to take a closer look to be sure it’s not … ?
Well, extraordinarily well done *thumbs up*!! (and an extra + for the Dany pic :D ) Amazing work!
This is pretty excellent. Not a fan on red velvet cake myself, but this is still one of my favorite valentine’s items I have seen all day. Well done.
Fantastic idea. And I love red velvet cake. But there’s no way I’ve got anything even close to the artistic ability to pull this one off. On the other hand, I’ve already got all the gear I need to assemble a distillation apparatus for the Water of Time recipe.
Artist, no. Science geek, yes.
You really always know what speaks to a girl’s heart.
Wait a minute…red velvet cake from a box? Not sure how I feel about that. The finished product, however, is fabulous enough for me to let it slide. Great job!
You know, I feel like raw stallion heart might be more of a treat for me, personally
Red Velvet is so good! Nice pics at the beginning.
I was really hoping for a delicious meaty heart recipe, but I guess this was cool too. ;)
Even knowing what that really is, I couldn’t do it. My stomach is shamefully weak, and my imagination too mighty. Athvezhvenar, zhey jolinaki! (Awesome job!)
I’m going to attempt one of these for my season 2 premier party. One of my invites is preggers, so what better way to test the strength of her unborn? I hope mine turns out as well… :)
This is awesome! To make them a bit more yummy, put a layer of icing between the cake and the fondant.
Quick question though, is it one piece of fondant for all 6 cupcakes, or do you use multiple pieces and work them together? thanks!
Premade fondant usually comes in a large sheet- we cut ours into 6 pieces. Those 6 pieces are used whole for each cupcake, the folds getting molded to look like like the parts of the heart. Hope that helps, and send us a photo when you’re done!!
Seeing that the season 2 premiere is on April Fool’s day, I’m planning to serve these. :)
I think I’m going to need a YouTube video from you two to figure out how to make this thing look like a heart. (Just think of it as a step towards A Feast of Fire and Ice cooking show.)
Thanks for all the great recipes.
Hmmm…perhaps we can swing that. :)
I’d love to make some mini ones for my coworkers for Halloween! Though… I’m not sure where you get fondant or even how I’d go about making the heart-shape happen… So I second the Khalil’s request for a YouTube video! :D
Hi Roo,
Hobby Lobby, and most other craft stores sell fondant.
Wow~little late here-but this is awesome! Appropriate for the mother of the stallion who mounts the world and anyone else who might like red velvet cakes…
My friend looks like Daenerys, so this is the perfect opportunity to get her to do some cosplay: If she dresses up, I’ll feed her horse heart cakes. In all seriousness, these look awesome, and can’t wait to try making them myself.
Something this elaborate definitely begs a how-to video. Those of us that are not so culinarily and artistically inclined could use the help. The same goes for the Weirwood cake. I’d like to give it a try, but I’m afraid it would be a disaster.
Are short videos the next evolution for the Inn at the Crossorads?
I’d love to! :D Maybe once the pre-season madness is past…
OMG!!! This is really, really cool !!!! Such a great idea :)
Your cupcakes are amazing !! I like so much this idea, they look like so much a heart !!
But, excuse me, I don’t understand the word “fondant” what do you want to say by that ? It’s like sugar gom paste ??
I am sorry for my english, I am french and I don’t speak English very well.
Amazing!!! I just made it for my friend’s birthday and it looks awesome! Thanks for the idea, kisses from Chile!
